Benefits of using technology in the classroom

Children today come to school immediately "plugged in." They listen to ipods on the school bus on the way to school and text their friends with their cell phones to name a few instances. As teachers, we must capitalize on the students' affinity for technology and integrate it into our classrooms. Students will be more apt to be engaged and remain engaged in an activity that uses an interface that they are familiar with. Teachers can make learning fun and exciting for students by integrating technology into the classroom, along with enhancing digital literacy, and content knowledge. Technology is ever changing and here to stay, so teachers must jump onto the technology bandwagon in the classroom...like the old adage says, "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Here are some interesting links as to some people's opinions of technology in the classroom:

Technology in the classroom

Technology should be used in the classroom in a way that makes sense to the students and the instructor. The technology should not take away from what the teacher is actually trying to get across to the students, but it should enhance and compliment what the teacher is trying to teach. The technology should be seamlessly integrated with the lesson plans and not stick out like a sore thumb during the lesson. Since science and technology are so intertwined, I do not think that it will be very hard to integrate technology appropriately, as long as I understand how to do so in an appropriate manner.

We should use technology in the classroom because it is a part of our daily lives, and students must be able to utilize it appropriately. As I have mentioned before, science and technology go hand in hand with one another, and as a science teacher it is my duty to teach my students how to utilize technology, and how it can benefit them and society.
